Megan : Disquieting Designs

What made you decide to start your craft?
Well I originally began crafting as a jewelry designer. There are so many incredibly talented designers that I knew I just couldn't compete. I know a few people that have allergies to chemicals in bath and body products and they were always having trouble finding products that they were able to use. Being the crafty type that I am I figured that I could whip up some stuff...and it just grew into an obsession from there!

When did you realize that it had evolved from a hobby to a full-fledged business?
Probably when it did become an obsession...I would spend time at work looking up new ingredients, working on my designs, redeveloping formulas, etc. I was never good in offices! :)

What keeps you inspired?
Scents. I love picking out new scents to play with. Also other crafters, some of them are so unbelievably talented they help me keep my drive going

Whats the hardest thing you've faced in having a crafty business?
My mother accepting it as a legitimate source of income!

What goals do you have for your business?
I plan to spend more time being pro-active in pushing disquieting into the public eye. In the beginning I was very naive into how this would work, I figured that word of mouth would get me far enough, and it has gotten me fairly far but only in Pittsburgh. I need to conquer the world!

What advice would you give someone starting out in your field?
Do your research, stay honest in your crafting, listen to your customers, and be very careful. There are so many people out there with sensitivities and allergies that this business is not made for those who are not willing to pay attention to detail.

Whats the best advice you've received?
Oddly enough, I was sitting in a bar during a sales slump whining to my friend. He went to the bathroom and I saw a sign on the wall. It was a simple wooden sign that said "Never ever ever give up." I took that as an omen and now it's on the main screen on my cell phone to remind me to stay strong.
